Hong Kong Eats: Tai Hing

What do you do when your feet is close to giving up and you're in the middle of Causeway Bay with none of your must-try restaurants list in sight?  You go in to one of the random restaurants that "looks not bad", of course!  Well, at least, that's what Hubby and I did.  Tai Hing looked like the best alternative that night because:
a.  It's right in front of us, and we simple cannot walk anymore.
b.  The restaurant is almost full, which means that the food must be ok.
c.  Hubby was already eyeing the roastings on the window.
d.  We spotted seats!

So yes, Tai Hing it is for dinner.  Although in my mind I was secretly praying that this won't be a dinner of wasted calories.  It would be such a loss to have one bad meal because of bad judgment when there's a whole plethora of good restaurants in Hong Kong.

Roast Eight Treasures (roast goose, roast pork, BBQ pork, plain chicken, squid, pig knuckle, beef shank and red sausage).  This was a hit or miss.  Others were tough (BBQ pork), while others were pretty much ok.

Crispy pork with pineapple in sweet and sour sauce.  This was the only dish I ordered that night.  It looked so good on the menu, and it looked pretty good when it came out.  It tasted pretty good too, except that the crispy pork wasn't too crispy.  Had it been crispier, it would have been a winner.

Eggplants and minced pork with salted fish in hot pot.  Tasted normal.

Sabah giant grouper with tofu in hot pot.  This was the winner of the night.  The soup was rich and flavorful, and the fish was tender (just wished it was boneless because it can be quite a chore picking out all those fish bones!).

Overall Tai Hing gets a 3.5 out of 5 stars.  It wasn't bad actually, it just didn't blow me away.

Tai Hing is at  G/F, Shop 1-3, Cigna Tower. 470-484 Jaffe Road, Causeway Bay. Hong Kong.
